Farming Female Porcupines

Those who have been reading my articles for a while now have likely noticed my political leaning. After all, it’s not like I’ve been subtle about it. On most issues, I heavily lean towards being a Libertarian. However, this isn’t to say that the Libertarian Party doesn’t have its issues. Like many parties, it absolutely has a diversity problem, and that in modern America is a heinous and disgusting offense. The media mouthpiece of the Libertarian Party, Reason TV, even mocks the lack of gender diversity in the party.

The ending of the Reason TV skit reveals an uncomfortable truth about Libertarians, albeit in a tongue-in-cheek way; the party is a complete sausage fest. The Libertarians cannot emerge as a bona-fide third party while missing out on a highly active voter base. However, it doesn’t have to be this way; with a few tweaks in their marketing strategy, Libertarians (also affectionately referred to as porcupines) can quickly introduce more females to the party.

In this article, I’ll go over some issues that lawmakers, advertisers, pundits, and legacy media all keep telling us are women’s issues. Personally, I find the label of women’s issues distasteful and patronizing; it implies that women don’t care about interest rates or tariffs, which I find hard to believe. However, for the purposes of this article, I’ll simply take these claims at face value, merely to show how effective a few minor pivots in marketing could truly be.

It’s no shock that women frequently do not feel safe walking home alone at night, which is completely understandable. This includes everything from the odd catcall or lewd comment to more serious transgressions such as being followed or even assaulted. This is further compounded by the fact that (sharpen your pitchforks for this one!) generally speaking, women are not as physically strong or as fast as men. Gasp! Yes, I dared to say the un-sayable thing in 2023. Thus, a laxed firearm policy would greatly benefit women. The Libertarian Party could easily spin their pro-firearm stance to appeal to the female demographic. Better yet, this is an issue that, with some clever marketing, the Libertarian Party could not only pry women away from the Green Party, but even from the Democrats as well. Radical Left pundit (eww…pundits) John Oliver portrayed female gun ownership in a negative light. John Oliver doesn’t care about women’s safety…

It’s no secret that major American cities, especially in California, have a housing crisis. Thus, the homeless population in cities such as San Francisco has become front-and-center in this post-Covid world. Homelessness in the Land of $9 Avocado Toast has increased 35% since 2019. California, as George Carlin has eloquently put it several decades ago, is over-run by NIMBY’s. In fact, NIMBYism has become a hallmark of the Democratic Party. San Francisco has no shortage of vacant office space, and there is no reason much of it cannot be converted into living spaces. The Libertarian Party has long advocated for reform of archaic and burdensome zoning laws. Herein lies the key to the Libertarians sweeping women off of their feet; compassion and empathy. Porcupines can appeal to the traditionally-portrayed-as-female sense of empathy by marketing this practical solution to homelessness, especially relative to other parties.

Education is yet another issue that the Libertarian Party can seduce more female voters. Legacy media and the large advertising budgets of the two main parties would have us believe that K-12 public schools are a front-of-mind issue for most women. Taking that claim at face value, the Libertarian Party can take this opportunity to truly shine. On this front, both flavors of radicalization; both the radical red and the bleeding heart blue agree somewhat that education reform is needed. Libertarians have long favored school choice and alternatives to public schools, and that is a selling point to women that isn’t being exploited nearly enough by the porcupines. After all, mother knows best!

Bodily sovereignty is another front that porcupines can come into the conversation and charm the ladies right into the voting booths. Left-leaning women have long been champions of the My Body, My Choice mantra, especially as it applies to abortion. The conservatives have a noticeably poor track record on this front, culminating in the June 2022 Supreme Court reversal on Roe V Wade. Libertarians can-and absolutely should-market their hands-off stance regarding healthcare decisions to the female voting bloc.

Essentially, the Libertarian Party has by-and-large just accepted that women aren’t going to vote for them; it doesn’t have to be that way. The above-mentioned issues are just a few stances that porcupines can use to attract more females into the party, rather than just conceding to the Democrats or the Green Party.
