Gavin Newsom’s podcast is absolutely worth a listen. Yes, you read that correctly. Yes, I’m serious. As previously discussed, I absolutely adore the politically radicalized because they serve as great canaries for my fleet. However, I am a skilled canary owner and thus it is balance for me, but not for thee as society devolves into an ocean of limbically-hijacked slaves of the Perpetual Anger Machine. Hence, I needed to find a decent left-leaning podcast to balance my listening. Enter This is Gavin Newsom….
Distrust Newsom if you will, but many of the phenomena he discusses on his podcast are plainly visible to anybody paying attention to the modern political landscape. And to be clear; this article is not an endorsement of Newsom or his party, and I’m still on Team Porcupine. His track record of running San Francisco and Los Angeles into the ground speaks for itself.
But credit where it’s due; Newsom has been willing to reach across the political aisle and host discussions with so-called deplorables. One of his first major episodes was with the right-of-center debater Charlie Kirk (eww…pundits). Newsom has even followed it up with an episode featuring Steve Bannon. Despite my long-beloved hobby of canary-farming, it’s kind of shocking to see a Deep Blue Liberal even willing to have a civil discussion with someone he disagrees with. Take notes, John Oliver…
Gavin Newsom has been quite open and forth-coming about the flaws of the Democratic Party. In his episode with Tim Walz, he admitted that Team Donkey has a hard time meeting Middle America where they currently are, and stated that they have a tendency to talk down to the working class of this country. This came when discussing with Governor Walz about how liberal leaders need to finally enter New Media and “fill the void”. The two grey-haired socialists openly discussed how Conservatives are currently “flooding the zone.” Leftists are now admitting that they have a messaging issue. Take notes, Jimmy Kimmel….
Admittedly, it’s hard to use FutureSense on Newsom in the context of his podcast (even if his actions are a totally different matter). Newsom has an ability to meld with his guest in a way that would make other liberals wince in agony. He isn’t trying to overtly play Gotcha games, lay rhetorical traps. or get overly confrontational. While Newsom pushes back on his guest’s ideas (stress-testing, to use his words), he’s able to keep the temperature of the discussion low. Take notes, Cenk Uygur…
Basically, Newsom’s willingness to admit the problems with the Democratic Party shows that he’s at least connected to reality. This puts him miles ahead of CNN and other left-leaning media outlets (to say nothing of their rabid fanbases). Moreso, Newsom does this without calling the opposition racists/sexists/homophobes/et cetera. Take notes, Joe Biden…
Newsom’s podcast also differs from that of the few prominent liberal shows because of his willingness to divulge from dogmatic talking points. Elizabeth Warren (and many of her slant) love quipping “well, you went to public school/drove on public roads/benefited from inventions created using NIH research dollars, thus you owe society”. It’s as if liberals believe public schools are shareholders (hint: they aren’t). Take notes, David Pakman…
In a way, Newsom indirectly affirms one of the main points in Farming Black Porcupines. The Democrats have a strong tendency to merely assume a voter base, rather than to work the ground game. The fact that few on the Left will even admit that there is a void in how young people/men/the working class/ et cetera consume media and engage in political debate highlights the problem. Is Newsom among the ranks of Lex Fridman or Joe Rogan? No, but then again, nobody on the Left is…
At one point Newsom even earnestly asked Kirk for his input on how the Democrats can better appeal to the majority of the nation, admitting that Team Elephant has its fingers squarely on the pulse of Americans. Kirk, being the consummate Red Player, refused to give his best advice to Newsom (great gamesmanship on Kirk’s part). Though the point remains; there is a certain level of humility in admitting when you’re getting stomped, and taking a step back to assess what needs to change.
Kirk mentioned a number of policies that the Democrats have backed that he referred to as 80/20 issues (where 80% of Americans stand in opposition). One such example was transgender women playing against cis-women in sports. Newsom even conceded that this was a policy that the party would be wise to abandon. And this is at great threat to his own career as Newsom risks being blackballed by his fellow Democrats.
While he hasn’t expanded on this too much, he’s dropped subtle hints at the future of the Democratic Party. There’s a watershed of returning to the lunchpail liberal days of union membership and onshoring manufacturing jobs (which he discussed with Bannon). Newsom admits that his side is “getting killed on DEI, CRT, and every other three letter word”. There’s hope that liberals will pivot away from the blue-haired shrieking feminists who get offended at everything and go back to actually caring about Middle America again.
Listen to This is Gavin Newsom, because most liberals won’t…
